Tron: Ares and Disney’s Risky Bet on a Cult Classic

Jared Leto as Ares in Tron: Ares (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

Disney has been dropping Tron: Ares trailers like candy lately, and that says something. When a studio floods the market with teasers, it usually means they are nervous. And honestly, they should be. Tron: Legacy did not light up the box office, and neither did the original.

These films sit in the same category as Blade Runner. They do not dominate theaters on opening weekend, but they build cult followings with loyal fans.

That history matters. Blade Runner 2049 was gorgeous but struggled financially as well. Disney has every reason to be sweating a bit as October 10th creeps closer.

The Trailer’s Core Pitch

Jeff Bridges as Flynn in Tron: Ares (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

The newest trailer, titled Flynn Lives, leans into that nervous energy. It runs three and a half minutes and spends a surprising amount of time recapping the Tron story so far. It even opens with Jeff Bridges in the arcade playing the Tron game, then slides into scenes from Tron: Legacy.

Disney clearly wants to catch up younger viewers who may not have seen Legacy, which came out way back in 2010. For many in the target audience, that feels like ancient history. The long recap feels less like nostalgia and more like Disney hedging their bets, making sure no one feels lost walking into this film.

The recap gives way to new Ares footage, where the heart of the story starts to show. The big reveal is that Flynn is alive, at least in some form. There is a scene of him speaking directly to Ares, which instantly raises the stakes.

How and why he survived remains unclear, but it is exactly the kind of hook that will get fans buzzing.

Big Visuals, Familiar Vibes

Visually, the trailer does its job. The digital landscapes look massive, and the Tron style is on full display. Neon symbols glow. Suits burn with light. And identity discs hum through the air.

My Take

Jared Leto and Greta Lee in Tron: Ares (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

I will admit it. I loved Tron: Legacy, flaws and all, so I am already primed to enjoy Ares. But even setting that aside, the new trailer works. It is slick, moody, and gives enough flavor without revealing the entire story.

Disney’s marketing strategy still signals concern. Four trailers already, with plenty of footage shown, reflect a studio working overtime to convince audiences this is worth the ticket price.
