Hard to believe now, but when the X-Men comics first launched in the ’60s, they weren’t exactly a hit. Sales lagged, and the series nearly died off before catching fire in 1975 when the lineup expanded with new fan-favorites like Wolverine and Storm. Fast forward a few decades and the mutants have lived through one full cinematic run under Fox. Now, Marvel Studios is preparing to bring them home into the MCU. A proper reboot is finally happening.
Feige’s Plan and Schreier’s Vision
Back in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige teased fans with the words everyone had been waiting for: Marvel Studios was rebooting the X-Men. At that same event, Mahershala Ali was revealed as the new Blade. Blade has been stuck in development limbo ever since, but the mutants are moving forward.
Feige later confirmed that Jake Schreier, the director behind Thunderbolts, would helm the X-Men reboot. Thunderbolts did not light up the box office, but Feige clearly sees potential in Schreier’s approach. Schreier has hinted this movie will feel very different from the previous films, focusing on identity struggles and internal conflict. The spotlight will be on younger mutants too, with stories centered on kids trying to balance homework and mutant powers.
Marvel’s Bigger Picture
The MCU is heading toward two massive events: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr. will return, not as Tony Stark, but as Doctor Doom. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Alan Cumming are confirmed to reprise Professor X, Magneto, and Nightcrawler in those crossover films. Many fans believe Marvel may use Doom to close the book on Fox’s X-Men and clear the runway for Schreier’s version.
The Script and Timeline
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie has been brought in to craft the story. He wrote Assassin’s Creed and the recent Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Love it or hate it, he knows how to handle sprawling casts and complicated worlds. The earliest the reboot will arrive is 2028, since Phase 6 does not wrap until late 2027. The wait is going to be long.
Who’s Playing Who?
Whenever a franchise resets, casting rumors spread quickly. Cyclops, Professor X, Wolverine, and many others are already being debated.
- Cyclops: Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water, Scream VI) is one of the rumored names. He denied it, but Marvel actors often do until the day they appear on set. Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw) is another fan pick.
- Professor X: Two big names floating around are Colman Domingo and Bryan Cranston. Domingo has the chops and has already worked with Marvel in voice acting. Cranston has said he would love to play Mr. Sinister, though fans continue to suggest him for Xavier.
- Other Roles: Margaret Qualley as Rogue, Hunter Schafer as Mystique, Nathalie Emmanuel as Storm, and Sadie Sink possibly as Jean Grey. Anya Taylor-Joy may even return as Magik.
- Wolverine: Hugh Jackman came back for Deadpool & Wolverine, but everyone knows he cannot play Logan forever. Rumors point to Jeremy Allen White, Jared Keeso, Taron Egerton, and Henry Cavill.
Reset vs Reboot
Feige insists this is a “reset” rather than a “reboot.” He wants the X-Men to exist in a single timeline instead of several alternate ones. That means Marvel may be moving away from time travel tricks. The studio is aiming for clarity instead of complications.
The X-Men reboot might be Marvel’s riskiest move in years. They have the advantage of hindsight, knowing what worked and what failed in Fox’s films. They also know Wolverine’s casting must be handled with care. If Marvel balances the roster, chooses the right cast, and grounds the story in character-driven drama, the payoff could be huge.

Daniel fell in love with movies at the ripe old age of four, thanks to a towering chest of drawers filled with VHS tapes. Which, let’s face it, was the original Netflix binge-watch. Ever since then, this lifelong movie buff has been on a relentless quest for cinematic greatness, particularly obsessed with sci-fi, drama, and action flicks. With heroes like Nolan, Villeneuve, and Fincher guiding the way, and a special soft spot for franchises where aliens, androids, and unstoppable cyborgs duke it out (think Terminator, Predator, Alien, and Blade Runner), Daniel continues to live life one epic movie marathon at a time.
