The Five Borough Killer strikes again at the end of Dexter: Resurrection season 2 episode 2, when a man crashes onto a Broadway newsstand beside Dexter and Charleyโs dinner table. Charley leaves before the police arrive. Dexter stays, looks up and vows to stop the killer before he claims a third victim. The camera takes us to the rooftop, where Dan Stevensโ killer is looking down at the scene.
The man on the roof is a separate threat from Ray Ballard, the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger. Dexter and Charley have just made plans to lure Ballard to a rented townhouse. Dexter goes into dinner thinking about the killer he can draw out on his own terms. By the time he gets up from the table, someone else has shown him how little time he has.
Quinn And The Ripper Are Still In Play
Quinnโs return in the premiere takes on a clearer purpose when he talks to Dexter about Angel Batista and the missing evidence from Praterโs collection. He knows about the blood slides and asks Dexter for help. Dexter has his own reason to stay close. Every question Quinn asks about Batista gives him a better idea of how much his old colleague already knows.
Then thereโs the New York Ripper. Dexter can sit across from him at a strip club, but the encounter gets him no closer to seeing the man in jail. Dexter can keep an eye on Quinn and wait for Charleyโs invitation to do its work. The man on the roof has already made good on two warnings. Waiting for a third would mean standing by while the police try to guess which part of New York he means this time.
Dexter Takes Half Of Harrisonโs Advice
Harrison tells Dexter to take what he knows to the police. Heโs been working alongside Fiona Mixon and getting a look at Wallaceโs investigation, and he tells his father how good it feels to be part of a team. Itโs a change from the premiere, when Dexter missed Harrisonโs swearing-in to pursue a killer on his own. Dexter hears his sonโs point about working with someone. He comes away thinking he should call Charley, the very person Harrison is wary of trusting.
At dinner, Dexter tells Charley that she and Harrison are the two people he counts as knowing his secret. Their hands briefly meet on the table, and Michael C. Hall gives Dexter a moment to enjoy being understood before the crash breaks the spell. Charley wants to be gone before the police get there. Dexter lingers at the table to see what happened. Theyโve only just agreed on how to handle a murder they can plan for. The one that happens right beside them sends them in opposite directions.
Charley Has A Townhouse Waiting For Ray Ballard
Charley has private email addresses for two of the killers Dexter has been looking into. He suggests giving them a reason to reply by staging a revival of Leon Praterโs Boogeyman Club. Coming from Charley, the invitation has a chance of sounding genuine. Dexterโs plan depends on the guests recognizing her and accepting her explanation for why Prater himself is absent.
Ballard is already on the road by the time she and Dexter sit down to dinner. Charley hands Dexter the master key to the townhouse and keeps the address from Ballard until he calls on arrival. She plans to get there first, play hostess, and introduce Dexter once Ballard feels at ease. Then sheโll leave Dexter to handle him.
Over a bottle from Praterโs collection, Uma Thurman makes the whole thing sound like one more evening Charley used to arrange for her boss. She knows how to make Ballard feel like an invited guest. Dexter can arrange a room, but getting this particular man through the door depends on a relationship he couldnโt have built himself. The episode ends before they get to see if Ballard buys it.
The Broadway Attack Puts Dexter On A Deadline
The first warning ended with a woman shot outside a rained-out baseball game. This time, the Five Borough Killer tells the police that someone will die on Broadway that night. Captain Mixon mobilizes his officers, who direct pedestrians around Times Square. The warning has them moving people through one of the busiest parts of the city while the killer can choose where along Broadway to make good on it.
Detective Wallace reads the killerโs earlier use of AirDrop as a demand to be witnessed. The newsstand makes her point for her. The body comes down hard enough to break the roof, in full view of people who had been sitting down to eat. The rooftop shot confirms the killerโs presence while leaving open exactly how the man went over the edge. From Dexterโs table, the whole thing seems to happen in seconds. He looks up from the wreckage and sees the man Wallace has been trying to catch.
Earlier in the episode, Dexter has three kills in mind as the threshold for going after the man. At the newsstand, he knows the man above him has claimed only two victims, and he decides to intervene before thereโs another. That distinction matters for a man who usually wants his rules to tell him when he can act. We hear a promise to stop the killer. How far Dexter will go to keep it is still open.
