Anora Didn’t Just Survive Awards Season. It Took Over

Some films arrive with noise. Anora arrived with belief.

Sean Baker’s 2024 film, led by Mikey Madison as Ani and featuring Mark Eydelshteyn as Ivan, broke through at Cannes in May 2024 when it won the Palme d’Or. That kind of launch can turn a movie into a prestige object overnight, but it can also create a trap. Festival hype fades all the time. What made Anora different was that its early acclaim did not stay trapped on the Croisette. It kept moving, slowly and then all at once, until it became the film that closed the 2025 Oscars with Best Picture.

That trajectory matters because Anora never looked like the obvious giant of the season. It was a sharp, funny, bruising film about class, fantasy, power, and sex work, made on a modest budget and carried by a performance from Madison that felt fearless rather than traditionally “awards ready.” In other words, it had passion behind it long before it had inevitability. That distinction tells you a lot about why the campaign worked and why the film’s legacy already feels bigger than a single trophy count.

Cannes Changed the Conversation Early

Winning the Palme d’Or gave Anora instant seriousness, but it also gave the film something even more valuable: a story people wanted to keep telling. Baker had already built a reputation through films like Tangerine, The Florida Project, and Red Rocket, but Cannes pushed him from admired indie filmmaker to major awards contender.

That Cannes launch also suited the movie itself. Anora plays with fairy-tale imagery, then drags that fantasy through a much rougher reality. So there was a neat symmetry in the awards narrative.

Neon Knew Exactly How to Sell It

A lot of awards campaigns try to sand down a movie’s rough edges. The smart move with Anora was that Neon apparently leaned into them.

By the end of the season, reporting on the campaign described a strategy that was playful, scrappy, and unusually keyed into the film’s voice, including grassroots-style screenings and bold promotional choices that matched the movie’s energy rather than apologizing for it. That mattered because Anora is not a polite prestige drama asking to be admired from a distance. It is messy, sexy, funny, and emotionally destabilizing. Selling it as anything else would have felt fake.

Mikey Madison Became the Face of the Film’s Rise

If the campaign had a center of gravity, it was Mikey Madison.

Her performance as Ani is the reason the movie lands with such force. She gives the character wit, exhaustion, pride, delusion, and raw survival instinct, sometimes all in the same scene. During awards season, that kind of performance can either surge because people feel they are discovering something electrifying, or stall because it does not fit the usual template. In Madison’s case, the excitement kept growing. She was in the mix across major groups, won the BAFTA for Leading Actress, and then took the Oscar for Best Actress.

That win felt significant beyond the usual “breakout star” narrative. Madison was not being rewarded for playing a role softened for audience comfort. Ani can be funny, impulsive, abrasive, romantic, and painfully exposed. The industry did not just respond to the performance’s intensity. It responded to the fact that Madison never asks viewers to pity Ani when she can make them understand her instead. That is a much harder thing to do.

The Oscars Win Turned a Contender Into a Landmark

Once Anora won Best Picture at the 97th Academy Awards, the conversation changed. It was no longer simply the cool Cannes champion that made it through the season.

The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Actress. Baker also made Oscar history by becoming the first person to win four Oscars in one night for the same film. That is the sort of stat that sounds almost too tidy for an awards-season narrative, but it captures how completely Anora became identified with his sensibility. This was not a movie that won because it was the least divisive option. It won because enough voters were fully on its wavelength.

Its Legacy Is Bigger Than the Campaign

Legacy can be an overused word in the week after the Oscars. Still, Anora already has a few solid claims.

It joined a very short list of films that won both the Palme d’Or and the Oscar for Best Picture, which places it in rare company and strengthens Cannes’ standing as a launchpad for eventual Academy triumph. It also gave Baker’s long-running interest in marginalized lives and unstable American dreams a level of mainstream institutional recognition that his earlier films never quite received, even when they were passionately admired.

There is also the cultural legacy, which may end up being the most durable part. Anora won big without smoothing out its subject matter, and Baker’s public remarks around the film consistently kept attention on sex workers as human beings rather than narrative symbols. In a season full of prestige packaging and strategic messaging, Anora felt strangely direct. It was specific, emotional, chaotic, and a little dangerous. That tends to last longer than a polished campaign slogan.

Anora’s awards run feels memorable because it never stopped feeling like the same movie. From Cannes to the Oscars, it kept its nerve. That is rare. Plenty of winners look important for a season. Anora looks like the kind of winner people will keep coming back to when they want to remember what a genuine surge of belief can look like.
